I have watched the movie of the man who kills vampires. And Angel tells me there are more movies and T.V. shows of killing vampires. I do not understand. I think vampires can might be mutants like us. If the vampires are mutants, why do people kill them so much? I think it is not good. And the movies are confusing. I still do not know why the light is talking.

There are mutants with powers that are like vampires. Marius, one of the students who isn't here right now, does something similar. But in the movies, vampires are usually dead bodies moving around because of something evil. People seem to make a distinction between "destroying things" and "killing people".

From what I hear, maybe that wasn't the best movie to introduce you to cinema with.

I think it is good if Marius does not meet Jesus.

To be safe.

I'm pretty sure Marius'll be safe from that.

Vampires, at least fictional vampires, aren't mutants. They're demons without souls.

There might be real people who are like vampires, I don't know. But in general, it's only evil vampires who get killed in movies and stuff. There have been a couple of TV shows about good vampires. They didn't get killed.

Why is a vampire good or evil? If people are afraid, how do they not be killed?

I would like to see the TV shows with the good vampires, I think. What are they named?

Um, well, Buffy and Angel both had good vampires (Angel actually was one.) And, um, Forever Knight.

There are probably more, those are the first three I could think of.

It provokes an interesting discussion, I think. If someone loses their capacity to make moral decisions and becomes totally driven by instinct and they're driven to harm people - do you still treat them as you would a normal person, or do they become a monster?

Date: 2006-09-17 08:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] x-siryn.livejournal.com
Um, are they an unholy demon from a hell dimension or are they still human?

Date: 2006-09-17 08:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] x-wildchild.livejournal.com
Human. If we stop treating them like they're human then we're the monsters.

Depends on if was made by choice, or if they did not have a say in the matter.

That depends

Are they harmful to those around them? I would say we still treat them as human either way but if they're harmful to themselves or others, then we have to take away their ability to do harm.

If it's because you can't choose, that doesn't make you a monster. We've had plenty of examples where people have lost that ability and we've still considered them human. Hell, they've still been considered friends and family, just needing help.

If you have the capacity to make moral decisions, if you sit there and you can weigh up all the options and still come up with the choice to harm someone else, even when there's alternatives, in cold blood and then keep doing it... then you're a monster.

It's a story. So in that story, the vampires are all evil, because they kill people. In other stories, they're not always evil - sometimes they have a hard time being good.

Sometimes the story is about a vampire trying to be good, and sometimes it's about people killing the evil vampires, and sometimes it's both.

Blade is a movie about this guy who is half vampire/half human who runs around killing the bad vampires to stop them from destroying the human race.

I would like to see this movie, I think.

It's rated R (meaning lots of violence and bad language), so let me just figure out the logistics if I can show it to you...

Date: 2006-09-17 08:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] x-rictor.livejournal.com
We can always see it for next movie night. It does have a connector (vampires)

And you let us watch JCVH, why not this?

Date: 2006-09-17 09:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] x-traction.livejournal.com
Well, I'm not generally going to step in and stop students from watching something that they organized themselves but there's a difference if I show it myself (not to mention I'd never heard of JCVH and didn't know it was rated R...)

It is hard to be good always. I understand this. I understand stories, too. Sometimes stories are like real things, and sometimes they are not. I do not understand if the vampire stories are like a real thing, or if they are not. But I think they are real a little because all people must try to be good. They must try this if they are not vampires, too.

Date: 2006-09-17 08:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] x-forge.livejournal.com
Exactly. I think that's why I don't watch too many movies - most times fiction resorts to too simple a morality: "these guys are always good, these guys are always bad". And in the real world, no one's beyond redemption, I'd like to think.

That and most science fiction gives me a headache with the bad science.

Part real, and part not. The vampires part isn't real, as far as anyone really knows. At least not the part where they die and come back needing to drink blood to stay alive.

This is way harder to explain than I thought because every time I try to come up with a vampire thing that people can't do, I know someone who can do it. Okay, vampires aren't real, but there are people who can turn into mist, turn into wolves, who need other people's DNA or blood or blood marrow to stay alive, and people who have come back from almost being dead.

But not all together at the same time.

Most of the 'good vampire' shows and movies are about how hard it is to stay good. Most of the 'evil vampire' ones, the vampires either don't care, or like being evil, or are just.. like a rabid dog. Too sick to know that they're doing something wrong.

Vampires are not real. I understand. They are like the talking light.

Is a less bean not real too?

Oh god. This was definitly not the best movie for youto have seen right away. Yes, those are real. .. someone else not me can explain.

Way to bail out there, Kyle.

Sooraya, a lesbian is simply a woman who is attracted to women instead of men. It's not bad or weird, in spite of Kyle's flailing up there.

We kinda guessed that from the whole relationship with Jay bit.

I'd think you'd have guessed it from the part where I'm not a chick first. I mean, I like girls. I'm just not a girl myself.

From: [identity profile] x-siryn.livejournal.com
You say you're not a girl. I don't have any evidence of that. However I do know that Jay was gay so therefore, you're not a girl and not a lesbian.

It's not a mutation, they live everywhere. I...actually don't know if we have any at the school. We used to have a few gay teachers. Um, that is men who were attracted to other men.

Shan, the librarian is, to go by her journal profile. Otherwise there's a couple of bisexual women - that's women who like both men and women, Sooraya - around.

Personally, I like both, but I did tend to end up with blokes most of the time.

The light was his mother. The Virgin Mary. She's still up in Heaven so she is talking to Jesus through the lampshade and his ice cream, because people are always seeing the Virgin Mary in lampshades and peices of toast.

I did not explain that very well.

This movie was supposed to be funny. I can see how it can be veryy confusing.
